Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death in children under 14. In 2012, September was named as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Read on to find out what you need to know about this life-threatening disease.

How Bad is It?

It may be shocking to learn just how bad cancer rates are among children. Here are some things to be aware of.

·                 Every day, 43 American children are diagnosed with cancer.

·                 At least 300,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer each year worldwide.

·                 10% of childhood cancer is caused by an inherited genetic mutation.

·                 More than 95% of childhood cancer survivors are dealing with treatment related health issues.

What’s Being Done

Childhood cancer statistics are scary, but fortunately, scientists and researchers are constantly working to find new treatments that boost survival rates. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a leader in many of these projects and has been successful in reaching the following goals.

·                 The treatments developed at St. Jude’s have increased childhood cancer survival rates from 20% to 80% in the 50 years since they first opened.

·                 St. Jude spearheads more childhood clinical trials than any other children’s hospital in America.

·                 St. Jude partnered with the World Health Organization on a global initiative that aims to cure at least 60% of children with six of the most common cancers by 2030.

·                 St. Jude shares research with medical communities worldwide via data sharing and analysis resources to further increase survival rates.

·                 St. Jude focuses on genetic mutations that cause cancer and uses early detection to treat them before it’s too late. They are also working on finding out why these genetic mutations occur to eliminate them at the source.

·                 The hospital is aiming to reduce treatment related health issues by gaining a better understanding of treatment’s long term effects.

How to Prevent Childhood Cancer

Many children develop cancer for genetic reasons, but there are ways to increase the odds in your favor. Here are some things parents can be doing to reduce the risk of cancer in their kids.

·                 Don’t Use Tobacco: Using tobacco products results in secondhand smoke that increases the risk of cancer. Also, children whose parents smoke are 25% more likely to start smoking as compared to children with parents who are nonsmokers.

·                 Protect Them from Sunburn: The sun causes skin cancer. Keep your child protected by applying sunblock, making them wear sunglasses and having them stay out of the sun during peak hours.

·                 Feed Them a Healthy Diet: Feed your child a diet of antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and vegetables and avoid giving them processed meats and salts.

·                 Encourage Exercise: Exercise stabilizes estrogen and insulin, hormones that are linked to cancer. A physically active lifestyle will reduce the risk of breast, bowel, and uterine cancer.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and it’s a great time to think about what you can be doing to reduce the risk of cancer for your child and children all over the world. What steps will you be taking to improve statistics?

Stress is a killer. It causes us to be agitated and snappy with other people and it has negative consequences on health.

One side effect of stress is fatigue. Fatigue could come from a lack of sleep or from simply being overwhelmed by everything you have to deal with. But with so much going on, the worst thing you can do is let it get the best of you.

If your stress is getting you down, here are some things you can do to get the energy you need to move past it.

7 Ways to Reduce Fatigue

Move Around

Exercising each day boosts endorphins minimizing stress and fatigue. You may have a regular exercise routine, or you may just take a walk around the block when you feel fatigue setting in. Either way, it should do the trick.

Eat Healthy Snacks

Healthy food will also energize you. It’s best to eat small meals every few hours so you don’t feel slow and sluggish. Bananas, apples and dark chocolate are examples of foods you can snack on during the day to get a boost.

Lose Weight

Extra weight can slow you down and make you feel even more fatigued. Both eating healthy and moving around are recommended for weight loss. Integrating them in your routine will reduce stress and help you reach your fitness goals.

Sleep Well

It makes sense that sleep will help reduce fatigue. But if you’re stressed out, you may find it difficult to get the shut eye you so desperately need. Setting a regular sleep routine, making your bedroom environment conducive to relaxation, and avoiding naps during the day will improve your sleep cycle.

Engage in Stress Reducing Activities

It’s best to treat stress at the source. You can minimize stress in your life by engaging in peaceful activities like yoga, meditation, socialization, and creative arts.

Drink More Water

Sometimes people feel tired because they are mildly dehydrated. If this is the case, a glass of water will be a great pick me up.

Take The Right Supplements

Eating right can help reduce stress induced fatigue, but for some people, packing and eating the right snacks can cause even more stress! Taking the right supplements is a convenient solution.

There are many vitamins and minerals that are said to fight stress and fatigue but  NeuroScience’s ExcitaPlus has a unique blend that really packs a punch.

Fitness trends come and go but there is one form of exercise that has withstood the test of time and that’s walking. Walking is  great for stress relief, it’s a terrific way to get out and enjoy nature, and some experts say it may even be better than running.

If you are looking to boost your fitness levels, read on to find out why adding more walking to your daily routine may be the right move to make.

Walking vs. Running

Walking and running are both great ways to get an outdoor workout. But which is more effective?

Running takes more exertion and requires more muscle recruitment, making it a good choice for increasing strength and burning calories. However, walking is also effective in helping people reach their weight loss goals. What’s more, it’s gentler on the joints, making it an ideal option for individuals who are obese as well as those that have ankle, knee, or back problems.

Recently, comparisons were made between the National Runners’ Health Study and the National Walkers’ Health Study. Researchers found that both walking and running provided similar benefits when it came to reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, and the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

The verdict? Do both. Experts recommend changing up workout routines to avoid plateauing (i.e., continuing to do the same workouts to the point where they stop providing results). Mixing up walking and running is a great way to keep challenging your body.

Benefits of Walking

Walking provides several health improving benefits including the following:

·                 Reduces the risk of disease

·                 Improves posture

·                 Boosts mood

·                 Improves cardiac health

·                 Fights depression and fatigue

·                 Good for weight management

·                 Boosts circulation

·                 Improves endurance

And that’s just to name a few.

One study found that a daily walk can reduce the risk of stroke, and the amount of time spent in a hospital each year. It also boosts longevity by 39% as compared to those who do not engage in regular physical activity.

Another study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine revealed that people that walked regularly were able to lower blood pressure, slow down resting heart rate, lower weight and body fat, reduce cholesterol and improve mood. Participants experienced a higher quality of life and better endurance levels.

A Stanford University study looked at walking’s effects on mental health and found that it resulted in a 60% boost in divergent thinking, a thought process used to generate creative ideas and solutions. Researchers found walking to be effective in opening up the free flow of ideas.

Another study showed that just 12 minutes of walking resulted in increased energy, focus, self-confidence, and happiness as compared to spending that same amount of time sitting. Walking in nature was shown to be especially effective in reducing negative thinking.

Walking has also been shown to improve memory and protect against degeneration of brain tissue as we age and to relieve anxiety and depression.

So if you are feeling down in the dumps or think your fitness levels need a boost, what are you waiting for? Get out there and start walking!

Mmmm…avocados. They have a creamy, buttery taste that makes you forget just how healthy they are. But they are quite healthy indeed. In fact, experts are recommending an avocado a day for optimal wellness.

Read on to find out how this superfruit can improve your quality of life.

Avocados and the Heart

Avocados are a great source of mono-unsaturated fat, fiber and potassium. This makes them a heart healthy powerhouse. A 2018 analysis of 10 studies showed that people that ate 1 to 3.7 avocados daily saw an increase in HDL (protective cholesterol).

The fruit also improves heart health in the way it affects gut biomes. A 2020 study of 183 overweight and obese participants showed that groups who added avocado to a daily meal experienced increases and diversity in gut microbes along with a decrease in bile acid and a boost in short chain fatty acids. These results contribute to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

Will Avocados Make Me Gain Weight?

Avocados are great for your heart, but what about weight loss? Avocados are high in mono-unsaturated fat…but that’s still fat. So will avocados make a person gain weight?

According to a study conducted by the National Health and Examination Survey, people who included avocados in their diets had less belly fat, lower BMI, and lower body weight than those that did not.

The Adventist Health Study 2 examined 55,000 individuals over a four to eleven year period and found that participants at a normal weight who ate one fifth of an avocado every day had lower odds of becoming overweight. Participants who were overweight and ate one fifth of an avocado daily were able to reach a normal BMI during the study.

Other Health Benefits of Avocados

Here are some other health benefits avocados can provide.

Good for Vision: Avocados are rich in zeaxanthin and lutein, phytochemicals that provide antioxidant protection to the eye area. They minimize UV damage and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Prevents Osteoporosis: Avocados contain 25% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin K, a nutrient that’s essential for bone health. It increases calcium absorption and reduces the urinary excretion of calcium.

Good for Babies: Avocados are rich in folate, which is important to take during pregnancy. It reduces the risk of miscarriage and neural tube defects.

Reduces Depression: The folate in avocado may be beneficial in reducing depression. It prevents the buildup of homocysteine, a substance that can interfere with the flow of nutrients to the brain, as well as the production of feel good chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.

Good for Digestion: Avocados are high in fiber, making them effective in improving digestion and lowering the risk of constipation and colon cancer.

In addition to being good for you, avocados are delicious on a wide variety of foods. Add them to salads and sandwiches or eat them on their own with a dollop of low-fat cottage cheese. You really can’t go wrong when you include these superfruits in your diet.

If your vision isn’t 100%, you may choose to wear glasses or contact lenses. While both options have their share of advantages and disadvantages, contact lenses are preferable for some. They provide more natural vision than glasses, they move with the eye, they don’t fog up, and they don’t get in the way when you’re being active.

If you are thinking of making the move to contact lenses, you may be wondering which one is right for you. This article will review the various types of contact lenses, so you can make an informed decision.

5 Types of Contact Lenses

Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are made of a flexible plastic material that is easier to adjust and more comfortable than rigid gas permeable lenses. They also allow more oxygen to get to the cornea.

Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses (RGP’s)

As compared to soft contact lenses, RGP’s are more durable and more resistant to deposit buildup. They provide crisper vision, they’re easier to handle, and they are less expensive than their counterparts. However, they are not as comfortable as soft contacts and may take a longer amount of time to get used to.

Extended Wear Contacts

Extended wear contacts are recommended for continuous wear of one to six nights or up to 30 days. They are typically soft contact lenses made of flexible plastic that allows oxygen to get to the cornea. However, there are some RGP’s that are approved for extended wear. The length of continuous wear is contingent on your tolerance level and lens type. Once extended wear contacts are removed, eyes should be given at least one night to rest without lenses.

Disposable (Replacement Schedule) Contact Lenses

The term disposable usually refers to a product that is worn once and then discarded. However, some soft lenses are referred to as disposable even though they can be worn more than once before they are replaced. Extended wear lenses may be worn for a prescribed amount of time before they are discarded making them fall under this umbrella as well.

Cleaning Your Contact Lenses

No matter which lenses you choose to wear, it’s important to care for them properly. This means cleaning them after they are removed. This will ensure that they will be free of contaminants once they are reinserted.

There are many solutions available on the market, but it’s best to use one made of all-natural ingredients that won’t irritate the eye. Clear Conscience Multi-Purpose Contact Lens Solution is recommended.

The Clear Conscience brand is known for making eye products you can feel good about using. Their Contact Lens Solution is ideal for cleaning, conditioning, rinsing, removing protein, reducing lipid deposition, and storing. It is a natural isotonic contact solution that is free of chemicals, good for the environment, and cruelty free.

Contact lenses are a convenient solution for those with vision issues. Now that you know the different types that are out there, you can find ones that are best for you. Which will you be choosing for your personal needs?

The 2020 pandemic caused excessive strain on health care workers. Doctors and nurses were concerned about their physical and mental health in dealing with long hours, underfunding, and staff shortages.

Now coronavirus cases are declining, but health care workers are still dissatisfied with their positions. In fact, recent studies have shown that 20% to 30% of U.S. frontline workers are rethinking their career paths. One April 2021 study showed that four in 10 nurses are considering leaving their jobs this year, and even more ICU workers are looking at new opportunities.

The United States is not the only country dealing with this issue. A recent report by the British Medical Association reveals that thousands of U.K. doctors are planning to leave their practices due to exhaustion and mental health concerns. About 31% said they were thinking of early retirement, 25% said they were considering taking a hiatus, and 17% stated they were looking at work opportunities in other countries.

COVID is Just Part of the Problem

One may wonder, why now? With the number of cases decreasing, you may think that providers would be looking forward to a more relaxed atmosphere in the workplace. But the truth is, COVID is only part of the problem.

The coronavirus exacerbated issues that already existed in the healthcare industry such as a shortage of funding, inadequate staffing, and long hours. One study conducted in 2018 found that 48% of clinicians were planning on changing careers due to excessive workloads, burnout, and a negative view of the future of medicine. Almost half stated that they would not recommend the medical field to their children.

The current attitude of medical institutions and health care workers could increase the likelihood of more epidemics occurring and may also lead to economic, political, and social unrest.

Other Workers Looking for a Change

Workers in the healthcare industry are not the only ones looking to move on.

In 2019, before the pandemic began, there was an increase in workers looking to quit their jobs in the hopes of getting better opportunities elsewhere. The pandemic fueled the fire. Many people were let go from their positions on a temporary or permanent basis giving them the chance to rethink their career fields and learn new skills.

Now that the pandemic is subsiding, statistics are showing that 1 in 4 workers may be looking for a new career when they rejoin the workforce. Some are hoping to find a job that suits their newly learned skill sets. Others are hoping for higher pay or a promotion. Yet others are looking to take advantage of the increased number of work at home opportunities available.

Businesses will be negatively affected by a loss of workers as they will need to spend time and money recruiting new talent. The shift may also have unfortunate consequences on company culture. Leaders are advised to try to hold on to employees by offering training and work at home opportunities.

The pandemic has caused many workers to rethink their career paths. Health care workers are likely to be considering new opportunities due to concerns about their mental health while individuals in other industries are hoping for a chance to showcase new skills and make higher wages. Are you one of the many that is thinking of moving on?

Wondering what to put on your breakfast table this morning? How about eggs?

Eggs are somewhat of a controversial food. They are high in vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. But their cholesterol levels have some people worried.

So, what’s the scoop? Should we be adding them to our meals or not?

New research came out with some of the answers you’re looking for.

The Good

Let’s start by looking at the health benefits eggs offer.

Eggs are a good source of protein, Vitamin B12, iron and zinc. Pasture raised eggs contain nutrients like vitamin D and omega 3 fats. These are all substances that people often don’t get enough of in their diets.

The Bad

Despite eggs’ high nutrient levels, many people are concerned about cholesterol.

A new egg health study published in JAMA revealed disturbing information for egg lovers. The study involved nearly 30,000 participants. Findings showed that those who added a half an egg to their daily diet experienced a 6 to 8% increased risk for cardiovascular disease and early death.

This is shocking news. However, the study did not look at other factors such as the participants diet habits, BMI’s, exercise and sleep patterns and whether or not they were smokers.

Eating Well.com consulted nutritional experts Katie Andrews and Abby Langer for their take on these studies and they provided some insight on what the findings mean for your breakfast menu.

The Nutritional Experts Weigh In

One large egg contains about 185 mg of cholesterol. That’s over half the USDA recommended daily dietary cholesterol limit.

However, Andrews points out that it’s important to consider that there are two types of cholesterol; the cholesterol we eat and the cholesterol produced by our liver.

Our bodies produce all the cholesterol we need. Dietary cholesterol is considered extra and it is not all absorbed by our body.

The cholesterol produced by our livers is responsible for boosting blood cholesterol levels and increasing the risk of heart disease. When cholesterol levels increase, it is usually due to the consumption of saturated fats and not high cholesterol foods. Genetic factors play a role in high cholesterol as well.

Most high cholesterol foods are also high in saturated fats. Eggs, however, are not. Therefore, you can add them to your diet in moderation without increasing health risks.

A Balanced Diet is Important

The information Andrews and Langers provided is good news for egg lovers. However, it’s essential to include eggs in a well-balanced diet. For instance, if you eat eggs over bacon every morning, you may not do as well as someone who eats their eggs with avocado and smoked salmon.

Exercise also plays a big role in health and a wellness boosting diet should be accompanied by the right amount of physical activity to produce a high quality of life.

The high cholesterol content in eggs has some people concerned. However, when combined with the right health habits, eggs can be a beneficial part of anyone’s diet. Will you be including them on your breakfast table.

We all know how beneficial exercise can be. It reduces stress, helps maintain weight, and even increases cognitive function. But can too much of it be bad for you?

A new study of the molecular effects of high intensity interval training shows that people who work out strenuously every day or almost everyday have experienced sudden and pronounced reductions in mitochondria function, as well as signs of blood sugar function.

When they cut back on exercise metabolic issues improved but did not go away completely. Researchers conclude that vigorous exercise may be beneficial depending on how often we work out.

What is HIIT?

High interval intensity training (HIIT) is a form of exercise that includes spurts of vigorous movement combined with short periods of rest. The interspersed periods of intense workout and rest shocks the body boosting metabolism and making it more effective in burning calories.

HIIT is said to improve aerobic fitness and wellness in general. The bursts of exercise are meant to increase mitochondria, which are energy powerhouses in the cells, which in turn boosts metabolic and cellular health.

Downsides of HIIT

HIIT has been a fitness trend for several years, but recent research has shown it has its share of disadvantages. For instance, it has been found that people who did HIIT three times a week for six weeks did not see as much improvement in blood pressure and body fat as compared to people who worked out moderately five days a week.

This may be because the four day downtime countered the positive effects of the three days of working out making for a deficiency in physical activity overall.

But is more HIIT the answer?

The study published in the Journal of Cell Metabolism was conducted by researchers at the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. Eleven participants took part in a month-long exercise program.

During the first week, the volunteers were made to perform two intense sessions of HIIT a week. In the second week, a third session was added. In week three, they were up to five sessions a week. In week four, they cut the amount they were exercising in half.

After each week, participants were tested for fitness and blood sugar control. At first, results were promising. The individuals were getting fitter and showing improvements in blood sugar control and mitochondria levels.

But in week three, results started to go downhill. Mitochondria production was decreasing and blood sugar control was also slipping.

In week four, when exercisers cut back, mitochondria and blood sugar control started improving but they never got back to the levels they were at before the study.

Researchers say they are not sure what caused the decline. They suspect that biochemical changes within the muscles overwhelmed and weakened the mitochondria which contributed to blood sugar control disruptions.

The results of this exercise are something to think about. It’s great to exercise, but a line needs to be drawn, especially for those who are doing intense workouts on a regular basis. How many workouts do you do each week?

CBD is the latest craze in natural health. People use it to treat anxiety, minimize pain, and it has even been shown to be effective in reducing the symptoms of some health conditions.

But did you know that CDB can also be useful for dogs? The cannabis compound has similar effects in pets as it does in humans, and it can be beneficial to a canine’s wellbeing with the ability to do everything from protect the nervous system to fight cancer.

One way CBD can be effective for dogs is in the treatment of skin conditions. Read on to find out the best way to use CBD for dogs in skin care.

Common Dog Skin Care Issues

There are many skin related issues that may affect your dog. Here are some of the most common.

·                 Allergies

·                 Fleas and mites

·                 Changes in weather

·                 Sensitivity to grooming products

We’ve all heard of smoked meat. But smoked cocktails? Apparently, it’s a thing thanks to a handy device called a cocktail smoker.

Smoking cocktails is nothing new. It’s a preparation that’s been used by bartenders for over 15 years. But it’s currently growing in popularity.

If you would like to try smoking cocktails, you don’t have to go out to a bar and spend a lot of money. You can make them from the comfort of your own home. Read on to find out more about the cocktail smoker as well as some smoky cocktail recipes you can whip up.

What’s a Cocktail Smoker?

There are a variety of cocktail smoker setups including the smoking box, the smoking lid and the smoking cloche, but one thing they have in common is they all use wood chips and a smoker gun.

To use the smoker, heat the wood chips in the smoking gun chamber with the hose attached to the end of the gun. The hose goes through the opening of the box or lid. Once the chips get hot, hit the “on” button to blow smoke into the cocktail.

The best way to smoke a drink is to smoke the glass before the beverage is added. The smoke will stick to a cold glass so you will want to chill the glass first.

But if you prefer your smoke full blast, you can add it directly to the drink.

Smoky flavors go especially well with Scotch and whisky, and smoked Old Fashioneds and Manhattans are some of the most popular smoked cocktails out there.

Smoky Cocktail Recipes

Now let’s take a look at some recipes you can make using your cocktail smoker.

Smoked Manhattan

1.              Infuse glass with smoke.

2.              Add Tabasco, salt, pepper and Worcestershire into a separate mixing glass.

3.              Add tomato juice, lemon juice and vodka and stir well.

4.              Pour mixture into smoked glass.

The coronavirus took the world by storm leaving devastation in its wake. It left individuals without jobs. Social distancing kept people from their loved ones. But worst of all are those that died from the virus, lost loved ones to the virus or were left with health conditions that lasted well past recovery.

Now the vaccine is here, and you would think that everyone would be racing to vaccinate. However, this isn’t necessarily the case. There are many people reluctant to become vaccinated, including those who very much want this to be over. In any case, the CDC has just lifted the mask mandate, so there are people in states on either side of the issue now.

Here are some pros and cons people are looking at.

The Reduction of Variants

Although the vaccine is successful in immunizing people from the coronavirus, there is a risk of variants.

When people get the virus, it mutates making it different for each person. Excessive mutations lead to variants that the vaccine may not be successful in protecting against.

The race to the vaccine is meant to reduce death and illness, but it’s aim is also to control the virus before variants get out of hand.

The problem is, the vaccine is not readily available in many other countries, so variants are more likely to develop overseas. If people travel to the United States and bring variants with them, they put Americans at risk.

Opening Up Too Quickly

The vaccine has brought a sense of freedom with it. More people are moving towards the mindset that the pandemic is over. Mask restrictions are starting to lift, and public events such as concerts are being given the green light.

But there is a concern that the world is opening too quickly. Although the vaccine is readily available, only 36% of Americans have gotten it (based on current statistics at the time of writing this article), and it’s impossible to tell who is vaccinated and who’s not.

Relatively low numbers of vaccinated people mean variants are more likely to spread. And with restrictions easing up, it may cause cases to increase even more quickly.

The Fear of Side Effects

Many people are not getting the vaccine including those who are eager for the pandemic to be over. If you ask these individuals why they are not getting vaccinated, a good number will tell you it’s because of the side effects.

Many people are skeptical of the vaccine because it was rolled out so quickly. They think that it was not well tested and may cause severe side effects that could even be life threatening.

While most vaccinated individuals experience temporary side effects, these are usually mild and go away within a day or a few weeks. However, there are those who have experienced anaphylaxis and thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome and even death after receiving the vaccine. Although these people are small in number, it is enough to make others skeptical.

There are pros and cons in the race to vaccinate, but it is hopeful more people will get used to this idea so we can beat this thing once and for all.

It’s important to get the right vitamins and minerals in our diets. A healthy diet is especially vital for children, as it supports growth and development, and it can help minimize the risk of disease and illness.

Vitamin D is a vitamin that parents must make sure is included in their children’s dietary routine. It plays a key role in the building of strong bones and it helps heal bones as well. However, it is rarely found in food. Therefore, it should be added to the diet in supplemental form.

This article will discuss the benefits of vitamin D for children and suggest ways you can make sure your kid is getting the dosage they need.

Benefits of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is beneficial in the following ways:

Supports Bone Health: Vitamin D is essential in the regulation of calcium and maintenance of phosphorus levels in the blood. These factors play a major role in bone health. It allows the intestines to stimulate and absorb the calcium that the kidneys would otherwise excrete. In doing so, it prevents conditions like rickets, or severe bow leggedness, and osteomalacia, a softening of the bones.

Minimizes the Risk of Flu: Vitamin D has shown to be effective in reducing the risk of the influenza virus. However, most studies are needed to prove this theory.

Increases Infant Health: Vitamin D deficiencies in children have been linked to conditions like high blood pressure and stiffness in the arterial walls. Children with low vitamin D levels are also more likely to have allergies.

Good for Pregnant Women: A 2019 review has shown a link between vitamin D deficiencies and preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and bacterial vaginosis in pregnant women. Women who did not take the proper amount of vitamin D during pregnancy were also more likely to give birth to children with allergies.

Why Vitamin D Supplements are So Important

Vitamin D is essential to health but getting enough in your diet is not as easy as it should be.

There are few foods that contain vitamin D. And while the sun is a good source, too much sunlight can be dangerous.

Therefore, it’s important to add vitamin D supplements to a healthy diet.

Every parent wants to give their child products they can feel good about. Nordic Naturals Baby’s Vitamin D3 Drops are recommended for their all-natural ingredients and their sufficient dosage amounts.

Nordic Naturals is committed to providing the world’s safest and most effective supplements. Their Baby’s Vitamin D3 Drops provides the recommended dose of 400 I.U. of vitamin D per day in one drop. The formula is made with all-natural ingredients like organic virgin olive oil, and it does not contain any artificial coloring or flavoring.

As parents, we want to do everything we can to support our child’s health. The right amount of vitamin D is essential. Make sure your child is taking a supplement to lower their risk of health issues and ensure they have strong healthy bones. What steps do you take to boost your child’s wellbeing?

As we get older, we all need to think about our loved ones and what they will need to do in the event we get sick or pass away. That’s why a will and a living will is so important.

Many of us think of making a will, but living wills are not considered as often. It may be that some of us are not completely clear on what a living will is. This article will explain a living will’s importance and why you should think about creating one before too long.

What is a Living Will?

A living will is a document that states what an individual wishes for in terms of medical care if they are unable to communicate with their providers. It may include any of the following.

·                 Whether you want life prolonging procedures administered if you are not going to survive.

·                 Specific directions about the care you want (i.e. assisted breathing, CRP, artificial donation, etc.)

·                 Whether you wish to be an organ or tissue donor.

·                 Palliative care decisions such as whether you would prefer to die at home or in a hospital or hospice.

·                 Considerations for spiritual and religious matters that may come into play.

Why is a Living Will Important?

A living will is important because it gives guidance to your providers. It also eliminates conflicts between family members who may have different opinions on how your care should be handled when you are nearing the end. It takes some emotional burden off your closest relatives and keeps you in control of what happens.

Do I Need a Lawyer to Create a Living Will?

It is recommended that you get some sort of legal counsel when writing a living will. Your attorney will be able to guide you to ensure all matters are taken into account. He or she will also see to it that the will is written in accordance with your state guidelines.

Some states have different guidelines concerning living wills. Some require you to use standard forms while others will allow you to draft your own. Some require witnesses and/or notaries. A lawyer will inform you about how the will needs to be written and they will make sure it is recognized in a court of law.

You should also talk about your living will with your providers. Doctors should be given a copy that may be kept on file or placed in a registry. Caregivers should also be made aware of your wishes.

Do I Still Get Medical Care if I Have Living Will?

Some people are afraid to make a living will, because they feel it will prevent them from getting medical care when they get ill. However, the document will not keep your doctor from providing routine medical care in an emergency.

It’s also important to realize that a living will can be altered according to feelings, which may change in the event of a serious medical diagnosis or life-threatening illness.

Despite the fact that living wills are so vital, less than 40% of Americans have them. If you are among the 60+% that do not, don’t hold off any longer. It could be the most important decision you ever make.

Remember the old days when you jumped on a scale and it just told you your weight? Ugh, so last year!

Today, smart scales are taking over. These are scales that offer additional metrics like body fat, muscle mass, BMI, and more. Their ability to measure body fat helps you determine if you are at risk for certain health conditions.

Many smart scales also work with Wi-Fi and apps providing accessible information wherever you may be.

There are a lot of different smart scales out there and they all have different features. This can make finding the right one quite confusing. This article will go over the features you can choose from making it easier to find the best scale for your needs.

8 Things to Know About Smart Scales

A lot of smart scales come with apps. They sync their data with third party fitness apps to help you track progress and find the best dietary and exercise routines for your body. The apps will also allow you to share your progress with friends, family members and workout partners.

If you have a fitness app you like to use, make sure your smart scale is compatible.

Recognizes Multi-Users

Some smart scales can recognize multiple users. Each member of the household has access to their own data that allows them to see how they are progressing. The scale syncs the information to make for a personalized app experience. Note: Most multi-user scales have a limit on how many people can use it.

Multiple Metrics

Most smart scales measure metrics such as BMI, body fat, and muscle mass, but some provide metrics that you may have never even heard of. These include water percentage, fat free body weight, skeletal muscle, subcutaneous fat, basal metabolism, body age, protein, and more. The smart scale you choose should offer metrics on the data that’s most important to you.

Wi-Fi Friendly

A Wi-Fi friendly smart scale charges via USB cables and does not require batteries. It also wirelessly connects with apps.

Pregnancy Mode

Ideal for pregnant women, this mode not only monitors the weight and metrics of the mother, but it tracks the growth of the baby as well.

Today’s smart scales have a variety of design options. Many have a sleek, attractive look and come in black or white. Some will also have rounded edges to prevent damage to the objects around it. Read outs are often bold and digital making them easy to see.

Smart scales range in price and generally fall within the $25 to $150 range. Like any product, you will want to find one that offers the best value for your money.

Weight Range

Most smart scales handle weights of up to 396 pounds although some are closer to the 300 lb. mark.

It’s important to keep track of body metrics. A smart scale provides you with advanced measurements and data that gives you insight on your health status so you can make the right workout and dietary choices. Will you be adding one to your home?

Red blood cells are typically round, and they move through the small blood vessels supplying the body with oxygen.  The work they do helps keep the system functioning properly.

In people with sickle cell disease, red blood cells don’t act so predictably. Instead of being round, they become hard and sticky looking more like a C shape that resembles a sickle, hence the name of the condition.

The sticky texture causes them to get stuck while they travel so they clog the blood flow instead of helping it. When a clog occurs, it is painful, and it can lead to acute chest syndrome, an infection or a stroke.

June 19 is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, a day set aside for people to gain an understanding of the disease. Here are some facts that will help open your eyes.

What is the Sickle Cell Trait?

People who have the Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) inherit a sickle cell gene from one parent and a normal gene from the other.

Individuals with the SCT will usually live normal healthy lives but they can pass the trait on to their children. In rare cases they may experience health problems that can occur at high altitudes, increased pressure and low atmosphere environments. They may also be prone to dehydration.

When Does SCD Occur?

The Sickle Cell Trait is usually harmless. So when does SCD occur?

SCD occurs when both parents have the sickle cell trait, and a child inherits sickle cell genes from each of them.

Although the child is born with SCD, symptoms will not become obvious until they are around five months old. At this point, they may experience:

·                 Hand-Foot Syndrome (swelling of the hands and feet)

·                 Painful episodes

·                 Anemia

·                 Infection

·                 Acute chest syndrome (characterized by chest pain, coughing, difficulty breathing and fever)

·                 Splenic Sequestration (a potentially life threatening condition that occurs when blood cells are trapped in the spleen)

·                 Vision loss

·                 Leg ulcers

·                 Deep Vein Thrombosis (when the blood cells gather in the vein causing risk of a clot)

Treatment Options

There are several treatment options for SCD. For one, the symptoms listed above can be treated individually to reduce pain and the risk of fatality.

There are also medications that decrease the symptoms of SCD. Hydroxyurea is one that’s been used but its long term effects are unknown. Endari (an L-glutamine oral powder) is a newer one to hit the market.

But the only way to cure SCD is with a bone marrow transplant. These are usually successful, but they require finding a healthy matching donor. In rare cases, the surgery can be life threatening.

Sickle cell disease is not pleasant, but it is easier for people to deal with if those around them have a better understanding of what they are going through. This June 19, please take some time to learn about this condition to make things better for others. You may even host and hold gatherings to raise awareness. Thanks in advance for your efforts.

It's almost National Iced Tea Month! This June, many of us will be celebrating by sipping on green tea and black tea varieties, which are very good for you by the way, but if you want to get a little naughty, treat yourself to a Long Island Iced Tea.

Long Island Iced Tea can be made in a variety of ways. It is typically made with tequila, light rum, gin, Triple Sec, vodka and a splash of cola. It has a terrific, sweet taste that is easy to drink down, so keep tally when you’re out enjoying these babies!

If you are looking for a Long Island Iced Tea recipe, this article has one that’s terrific for cooling down on hot summer days and nights.

Long Island Iced Tea Origin

So why is it called Long Island Iced Tea anyway?

The story goes that the drink was created in 1972 by Robert “Rosebud” Butt. Butt worked at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island, New York and invented it as an entry in a contest requiring contestants to come up with a new drink that included Triple Sec.

However, there may have been a similar drink that came out during Prohibition in the 1920’s. That cocktail was said to have been created by “Old Man Bishop” who lived In a local community named Long Island in Kingsport, TN.

The drink was later perfected by Old Man’s son Robert Bishop. It contained whisky, maple syrup and varied quantities of the five liquors typically found in the drink.

Long Island Iced Tea has grown in popularity over the years and it has gone on to inspire other ‘copycat’ drinks. For instance, The Grateful Dead cocktail uses the same mix, but the Triple Sec is replaced with Chambord and the cola is replaced with a lemon lime soda.

The Tokyo Iced Tea also shares the recipe, but the Triple Sec is replaced with Midori and the cola is substituted with lemon lime soda.

Long Island Iced Tea Recipe

Now you know more about the drink. Here’s how to make it!

·                 2 cups ice cubes

·                 1 ounce gin

·                 1 ounce vodka

·                 1 ounce white tequila

·                 1 ounce white rum

·                 ½ ounce triple sec

·                 ½ cup coca cola or to taste

·                 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

·                 2 lemon wedges

Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Pour liquors and lemon juice into the shaker. Cover and shake vigorously. Put in the refrigerator to chill. Once cold, pour into glasses leaving the ice in. Garnish with lemon wedges and serve.

Note: Not to take the fun out of drinking, but Long Island Iced Tea packs quite a punch. It has four shots of liquor so one glass has the same effect as drinking four beers. Combine that with its sweet taste and it’s easy to overdo it!

This summer we all deserve to have a little fun. Long Island Iced Tea is perfect for kicking back on hot summer nights and enjoying good times with friends. What drinks will you be mixing up when it’s time to chill?

We all know how important it is to eat a healthy diet. After all, we are what we eat. Getting the right nutrition can set us on a path for longevity and an improved quality of life.

You really can’t go wrong if you eat plenty of fruits and veggies. They are packed with vitamins and minerals that benefit our body’s functions and organs. And with June being National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, now is the perfect time to start getting more of them in your dietary routine.

The heart is one organ you will want to pay close attention to. Too many people suffer with heart conditions as a result of a poor diet. Fortunately, there are plenty of fruits and veggies that are beneficial to heart health. Here are a few you will want to be adding to your meals.

7 Best Fruits and Veggies for Heart Health

Broccoli is a high fiber food. That means it helps you feel fuller longer. This cuts down on excess snacking that can cause obesity, which often goes hand in hand with heart disease.

Pomegranates are often considered a superfood, because they are rich in a heart healthy micronutrient called ellagic acid. The compound helps block cholesterol buildup in the arteries. Pomegranates are also a good source of potassium which controls blood pressure, and they are high in fiber.

Cauliflower is rich in vitamin C, an immune boosting antioxidant. Its ability to improve the immune system protects the body from oxidative stress, which is a precursor to heart disease.

You know the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well, it may be true! Apparently, it can reduce the need for a cardiologist as well! The fruit is full of heart healthy compounds like pectin, which is a type of fiber, and quercetin, an antioxidant found in the fruit’s peel. Apples have been shown to regulate blood sugar and improve blood lipid profiles. They are also high in cholesterol lowering soluble fiber.

Green Beans

Green beans are a heart healthy staple. They are a great source of vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in fiber and B vitamins. For best results, eat them fresh instead of canned and steam or roast them instead of drowning them in a heavy sauce.

Pears are considered a heart healthy food due to their high fiber content. Make sure you get a healthy dose of fiber by leaving the skin on.

With summer on its way, you’ll want to be adding plenty of berries to your diet. Blueberries are highly recommended for heart health. They contain antioxidant polyphenols called anthocyanins that are known to reduce oxidative stress and minimize the risk of heart disease. They are also known to lower “bad cholesterol” and enhance the function of the arteries.

Fruits and veggies are low calorie, heart healthy foods that add color to every meal. Many of them taste great too! How will you be including them in your dishes to give your meals an extra boost?

The pandemic has had devastating effects around the world. Now that the vaccine is here, we can all breathe a sigh of relief. But word of new variants of the virus that the vaccine may not protect against is causing worries to emerge.

When a virus replicates, it changes a bit creating mutations of itself. These mutations are variants of the original virus. The more the virus spreads, the more opportunities it has to change. And with a widespread virus like the coronavirus, you can bet there have been plenty of mutations.

The question is, how well do the new vaccines protect against these mutations? Read on to find out.

The New Variants and the Vaccine

The three vaccines currently circulating in the U.S. are Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson. All of these are expected to provide some protection against new virus variants. If it is found that they are not doing enough to protect against variants and reduce the spread, scientists may work to change their composition to increase their ability to fight mutations.

Currently, studies are underway to determine how the vaccine is working to reduce the spread of variants. The World Health Organization (WHO) is working with researchers, scientists and health officials to understand the vaccine’s impact on variants. Information on their progress can be found at WHO’s Disease Outbreak News.

Updates from Moderna

Moderna has released information stating that their vaccine offers protection against variants of the strain but that it is more effective in fighting the virus mutation that originated in the U.K. than it is in fighting the one found in South Africa. The company is increasing its efforts to reduce the spread of these viruses by testing booster doses of the vaccine that will be designed to fight newly emerging strains.

The testing the company has conducted shows that when their vaccine was used on the B.1.351 variant that was found in South Africa, it was six times less effective at producing antibodies to fight the virus in comparison to when it was used on other strains. When the vaccine was used on the B.1.17 virus that originated in the U.K., it was found to be just as effective in producing antibodies.

How Can We Prevent Future Variants?

While the powers that be work on producing vaccines that protect against all strains of the virus, we can continue to take steps to reduce transmission by washing our hands, social distancing, and wearing masks. Getting the vaccine will also help reduce spread to keep variants from emerging, so schedule an appointment as soon as your turn comes around.

The coronavirus has thrown all of us for a loop. Now that the vaccine is here, we are hopeful that it will go away, but news of new variants has many of us concerned. It is good to know that science is on our side and researchers are taking steps to make sure their vaccines are effective in protecting us from the mutations that emerge.

Here’s to hoping for a brighter and healthier future.

It may be that you have been sitting in one position at your desk for too long. Or it may be that you hit it really hard on the tennis courts the other day. But whatever it is, those muscles are feeling tight… and you need some relief.

Booking a massage is an option, but massages can be expensive, and you’ll have to deal with sore muscles while you wait for your appointment. Fortunately, there are at-home items you can use that do the work of a massage therapist that are not nearly as expensive or high maintenance.

The most effective of these devices may be a massage gun. Read on to find out about massage guns and how they work.

What are Massage Guns?

Massage guns somewhat resemble a power drill. They come with various attachments including finger-like tips and balls that have different settings that allow you to get that perfect experience.

The gun uses a method known as percussive therapy. The movement of the gun flushes extracellular fluids out of the muscle tissue and into the circulatory system. In doing so, it promotes blood flow and relaxation.

Massage guns are great for workout recovery and they are often used by athletes. They can also reduce tension and increase function, making them beneficial to people with injuries.

Can Massage Guns Be Harmful?

Massage guns are quite effective and can sometimes even be too effective. Here are some things you should be aware of when you use them.

Don’t Use Them on Other People: It is recommended to use the massage gun on yourself and not on other people. When you use the gun on yourself, you can tell exactly how much pressure to use and the sort of motion your body needs. When you use it on another person, these factors will be difficult to determine, and you may end up hurting your massage partner.

Be Careful When Using Them on Yourself: You must also be careful when using a massage gun on yourself.  If you begin feeling electric-like sensations, like pins and needles when self-massaging, you may be hitting a nerve and you will want to put the gun down.

Other Things to Note:

·                 The gun should never be used on an area that has impaired sensation.

·                 The gun should only be used on muscles. Avoid use on nerves, joints, tendons, and bones.

·                 Do not use the gun on areas with scabs, wounds, lesions, or recent fractures.

·                 Never apply the gun to the neck. It could cause a tear in the carotid artery.

·                 The gun should not be used if you are on blood thinners or bleed or bruise easily.

Massage guns range in price from $100 on up. It is best to find one from a brand you can trust. Look for a model that’s low noise and has a convenient ergonomic design.

Tense muscles can be a real pain (pun intended). Massage guns can provide you with the relief you are looking for but they must be used with caution. Will you be adding one to your relaxation tools?

Dehydration is a bigger issue than you might think. It causes restlessness, changes in mood, and it can even result in a sudden loss of consciousness. While some may assume that dehydration is easily preventable, one hard workout, or a night out drinking can bring on the symptoms before you know it.

DripDrop is a dehydration solution that will keep you functioning no matter what kind of day or night you’ve had. It’s a great tasting ORS (oral rehydration solution) developed by Dr. Eduardo Dolhun. It comes in a convenient single size serving making it easy for people to get the hydration they need wherever they go.

Read on to find out more about DripDrop and how it can help you stay hydrated.

What is DripDrop?

ORS’s were first created in the late 1960s.  They are balanced electrolyte mixtures that consist of salt, sugar and water. They work by triggering water absorption in the small intestine. The resulting sodium and glucose promote the movement of water into the bloodstream to fight the effects of dehydration.

DripDrop is an ORS that comes in a single serving stick design. Each 10 gram stick has 35 calories and 7 grams of sugar, half the sugar of other hydrating drinks like Gatorade. It also contains three times the electrolytes of most sports drinks making it that much more effective. It comes in a variety of fruity flavors including watermelon, lemon, berry, and more.

DripDrop was developed by Dr. Dolhun after the physician witnessed children in Guatemala throwing up from the bad taste of an ORS after a cholera outbreak. It has since been used to treat victims of dehydration in natural disasters and is often carried by military medics, firefighters and athletes. It has been ‘Certified for Sport’ by NSL International making it a trusted product for athletic programs like the NHL, MLB, PGA, and NFL.

What People are Saying

But DripDrop is not only used in professional settings. Its on-the- go packaging makes it convenient for everyday use as well.

People that have tried the product find it easy to get the dehydration they need throughout the day. The packets can be stored in a purse or work bag. As long as water is accessible, they can mix themselves a drink at any time.

The ORS has been reported to have a pleasant taste and people prefer it because it is not high in calories or sugar. They claim it has been helpful in speeding up recovery from hard workouts. Some have also said that it is effective in helping them overcome dehydration due to a stomach flu and that the product’s mild flavor does not upset sensitive stomachs.

Staying hydrated is so important. DripDrop presents a dehydration solution in the form of a convenient, great tasting single serve package. Will you be packing it with you the next time you head out for the day?

We all have problems maintaining focus every once in a while, but if you find this is happening to you more often than it should, you may be dealing with brain fog.

Brain fog isn’t technically a medical condition. Rather, it’s a symptom of other conditions. It manifests as:

·                 Memory Issues

·                 Trouble concentrating and focusing

·                 A lack of clarity

This article will take a look at the underlying causes of brain fog and what you can do to treat it.

What Causes Brain Fog?

·                 Stress: Stress exhausts the brain making it difficult to think and focus.

·                 Sleep Issues: If you don’t get a good 7-9 hours of sleep each night, it could result in cloudy thinking.

·                 Hormonal Imbalance: Women are susceptible to hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause that can cause forgetfulness and an inability to concentrate.

·                 Diet: A diet high in Vitamin B-12 will set you up for focused thinking. MSG, aspartame, peanuts, and dairy foods can have the opposite effect.

·                 Medication: There are certain medications that may cause unpleasant side effects that include brain fog. If your medication is causing fuzzy thinking, consider switching or lowering your dosage.

·                 Medical Conditions: Medical conditions that cause inflammation, fatigue, and changes in blood glucose levels can cause you to lose clarity.

How to Diagnose Brain Fog

If you are experiencing ongoing brain fog, you may want to see your physician. Your doctor will ask you questions about your mental health, diet, level of physical activity, and the medications and supplements you are taking.

You also may have to undergo testing to determine if there are any medical conditions that are causing brain fog. For example, your provider may recommend that you have blood work done or they may ask you to get an MRI, X-ray or CT scan to determine if you have any new health issues.

Once testing is complete, your doctor will be able to come up with a treatment that will help you overcome your mental fatigue.

How Do You Treat Brain Fog?

Once you and your provider understand the underlying cause of brain fog, you will be able to figure out the best way to treat it. In some cases, lifestyle changes will help increase your concentration. These can include any of the following:

·                 Better diet

·                 Better sleep

·                 Increased physical activity

·                 Stress management exercises

·                 Exercising brain power by reading, puzzle solving, etc.

·                 Engaging in underlying activities

If brain fog is the symptom of a more serious medical condition, your doctor may prescribe medications. For example, if an autoimmune disease is causing a lack of clarity, your physician may recommend a corticosteroid. If you’re anemic, iron supplements could do the trick.

Brain fog is a frustrating condition, but it is treatable. If you are having trouble with mental clarity and memory, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental professional to find out the cause so you can get on the road to an improved quality of life. Here’s to a more focused and enjoyable future.

Figure Out Why You Want to Get in Shape

Once you have a goal in mind, you will feel inspired to move forward. A goal should not be losing a certain amount of weight. It should be about looking better and feeling better. With this type of attitude, it will be easy to say no to fatty foods and yes to powering up for a good workout every day.

Find Small Ways to Be Active

It’s a good idea to set aside a block of time each day for a solid workout, but there are other ways to fit physical activity into your busy day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car a little further from your destination. Get up from your desk to stretch when you need a break at work. Find small ways to be active every day, and you will see it start to pay off.

Improve Your Diet

A good diet will help you maintain a healthy weight and it will give you the energy you need to want to work out. Dump high carb foods and preservatives and opt for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein instead.

Get Plenty of Sleep

We all lead busy lives, but it’s important to make sleep a priority. Carve out a good 7-9 hours of your day to devote to sleep. Create a soothing atmosphere in your bedroom that’s conducive to rest. Better sleep will make you feel more energetic and motivated to move.

Hydration is important. It is good for digestion, it moisturizes the skin and it boosts energy levels. Make sure to have a water bottle with you wherever you go so you can sip on it during the day. Before you know it, you will have reached your 11-15 cup goal.

Workout with a Friend

We all know how easy it is to blow off a workout. But it won’t be as easy to do if you have workout plans with a friend. Working out with a friend will hold you held accountable for your workouts, and you will also have more fun exercising with a buddy. This will make your time in the gym enjoyable eliminating those feelings of dread.

The signs of spring are all around us. Get on board by embarking in a healthy regimen that will help you reach your fitness goals. Which of the tips in this article motivate you?

Your heart resting state refers to the number of beats per minute your heart emits when it is resting (i.e. not exercising or dealing with stress). It is a good indicator of whether you have a healthy heart.

A healthy heart resting state for adults is between 60 and 100 BPM. Generally, the lower your BPM, the healthier you are. For instance, a professional athlete may have a heart rate as low as 40 BPM.

Read on to find out more about heart rate and what you can do to improve your cardiovascular health.

How Can I Check My Heart Rate?

It is standard procedure for doctors to check a patient’s heart rate during a checkup. But if you want to check it at home, here’s what you need to do.

1.              Check your pulse. You can do this by placing your middle and third fingers on your neck on the side of your windpipe. You can also check your pulse at your wrist by placing your two fingers on the bone and tendon on the thumb side of the wrist.

2.              When you detect your pulse, count how many times it beats in 15 seconds. Multiply this number by four and you have your beats per minute.

What Factors Affect Heart Rate?

There are many factors that can make heart rate fall outside of the normal range. These include the following:

·                 Age

·                 Having a heart condition such as diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease

·                 Fitness

·                 Taking medications

·                 Air temperature

·                 The way your body is positioned (i.e. whether you are lying down or standing up)

·                 Emotion (for example, stress can bring heart rate up)

·                 Activity (exercise can bring heart rate up)

·                 Body size and weight

Some of these factors are temporary while others could be affecting heart rate on an ongoing basis. If you find your heart rate is consistently too high (tachycardia) or too low (bradycardia) you may want to see a doctor.

Although low heart rate can be a sign of good health, if BPMs are lower than 60, it can be concerning, especially if you are not a trained athlete and you are experiencing symptoms like dizziness, fainting and difficulty breathing.

How to Achieve a Normal Heart Rate

A healthy heart rate is the sign of a healthy heart. If your BPM is outside of normal range, it is best to see a doctor so you can discuss treatment options. However, here are some things you can do to keep your heartbeat on track. Here are some suggestions.

·                 Eat a heart healthy diet: Foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and fish are recommended. Try heart support supplements as well.

·                 Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity is often linked to an abnormal heart rate.

·                 Not smoking: If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, consider quitting.

·                 Exercise: Regular physical activity will keep your heart within normal range.

·                 Manage health problems: If you have a heart condition follow doctor’s orders by taking prescribed medications and making suggested lifestyle changes.

Now that you know what a healthy heart resting state is, you can begin monitoring to keep your BPM’s under control. So tell us, what’s your number?

If your grandma taught you some vintage canning recipes, you may already know that canning foods is a great way to preserve food. It involves putting food in jars or a similar container and heating them to a temperature that destroys the microorganisms that cause spoilage. During the heating process, the air is driven out and locked out. This prevents it from getting back in and bringing the contaminating microorganisms with it.

While this all makes sense so far, it’s more easily said than done. This article will take a look at the steps you will need to take to keep food from spoiling when you’re canning at home.

What Canning Methods are Safe?

When it comes to processing food safely, there are two methods, the boiling water bath method and the pressure canner method. Let’s take a look at both.

Boiling Bath Water: For this method, jars of food are covered with boiling water and cooked for a specific amount of time. It works well for tomatoes, fruits, jams, jellies, and preserves.

Pressure Canning: To pressure can, place your jars of food in a pressure cooker filled with 2 to 3 inches of water and heated to 240 degrees Fahrenheit. This will be effective in killing clostridium botulinum, a microorganism found in low acidic foods like meat and vegetables. That’s why this is an ideal method for vegetables, meat, poultry, and seafood.

Canning Equipment

In order to can food, you will need the proper equipment including the following.

Water Bath Canners: These are large cooking pots with a tight fitting lid. They sit on racks that allow the water to flow around and underneath them while boiling. The rack also keeps jars from bumping into one another as the boiling takes place.

Pressure Canners: Pressure canners are heavy pots with a specially made steam tight lid. The lid has a vent and a dial or waited pressure gauge and a safety fuse. It may also have an extra cover lock and it may or may not have a gasket. Like a water bath canner, the pressure canner will also sit on a rack to allow water to get around it and to keep it protected from other canners.

Jars: When canning, it’s important to use the right type of jar. A mason or ball jar will work best. These are available in a variety of sizes so you can choose one that suits your needs. Most commercial food jars are not recommended.

Jar Lids: Most canning jars will come with a two piece self sealing lid that features a flat metal disc and a sealing compound similar to rubber around one side. It will also have a screw type metal band that can be reused as long as it is clean and rust free.

Canning Utensils

Here are some utensils that may be helpful in the canning process:

●      Jar lifter: This will help you move around hot jars.

●      Jar funnel: This will help you pour liquids into jars

●      Lid wand: This magnetized wand helps you lift jar lids from hot water.

●      Clean cloths: This will come in handy for general cleanup.

●      Timer: To make sure food is processed for the correct amount of time.

●      Narrow flat rubber spatula: The spatula can remove trapped air bubbles before jars are sealed.

It’s also a good idea to have hot pads and cutting boards on hand.

Now you know how to keep foods from spoiling when canning them at home. Which items will you be preserving for later use?

Spring is just around the corner. The flowers will be blooming, the birds will be singing, and, oh yeah, you’ll be seeing a lot more bugs around.

Like all living creatures, bugs serve their purpose, but most of us would rather not have them in our homes. Read on to find out about the pests you can expect to see as temperatures get warmer and what you can do to keep them away.

How to Get Rid of 5 Common Spring Insects

Cluster Flies

Cluster flies look like common house flies, but they are more damaging.

The golden cluster fly is commonly found in attics where they get together with their buddies and swarm. They get into houses through cracks in siding and around windows in fall and winter to escape the cold outdoor temperatures. They lie dormant through the winter, but once the weather warms up, it’s time for them to party.

And more than just being annoying, they can do damage to the house.

Since cluster flies come in through cracks, it’s best to make sure everything is sealed. Add screens to windows and vents and fill up any openings in the exterior of your home. Taking these measures should mean that you won’t be seeing these pests flying around.

Boxelder Bugs

So called because they feed on boxelder trees, boxelder flies are characterized by their dark gray bodies and distinctive red stripes. Like cluster flies, they enter the home to escape cold temperatures and become active when the thermometer rises. They don’t bite and are not destructive, but they can leave a residue that stains fabric on furnishings.

Since these bugs come in from the outside, you will want to make sure all cracks and openings are sealed, especially on the west and south sides of your house where the sun is strong in the late fall and summer months.

Larder Beetles

Larder beetles may also enter your home seeking warmth. They typically come in the spring looking for food such as meat, pet food and dead insects. They are recognizable by their brown shield-like bodies.

To keep larder beetles at bay, keep your food tightly sealed and clean up any messes in the kitchen.

Multicolored Asian Lady Beetles

These lady beetles may seem delightful judging by their name, but trust me when I say, you do not want them in your home. They resemble North American ladybugs and do not do any damage, but they emit an unpleasant smelling yellow liquid when they feel threatened.

The beetles come into the home in the fall and become more active in the spring and summer. Seal all cracks and openings in your exterior to make sure they don’t get inside.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs

Unlike lady beetles, stink bugs don’t sound pleasant at all.  Named for the foul-smelling odor they give off when they feel threatened, they are native to Asian countries and arrive in the U.S. via shipping containers.

The bugs enter the home in fall and winter and become active in the spring and summer. Make sure your home is well sealed to keep them out.

We are all excited to welcome spring, but the bugs that come with it… not so much. The tips in this article will help keep bugs away so you can enjoy the season. What do you do to keep spring bugs out of your home?

We all know how good it can be to get up and walk around the block or even to take a break from work to stretch our muscles. But recent research suggests that not doing so can actually be harmful.

Experts are now saying that sitting for long periods of time has been linked to health conditions like high blood sugar, excessive abdominal fat, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Read on to find out more about why it’s so important to get up and move.

What Research is Saying

When you sit, you don’t use as much energy as you do when you stand. If you sit for long periods of time, you increase the risk of obesity, which is tied to high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. These conditions can lead to metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer.

How Much Sitting is Too Much Sitting?

Studies show that any extended sitting can be harmful. An analysis of 13 studies showed that sitting for eight hours a day with no physical activity can have similar risks to obesity and smoking. Activities that involve long periods of sitting include driving long distances or sitting at a computer all day.

Excessive sitting can also increase the chances of dementia. Exercise keeps people thinking. It improves memory, reasoning and judgment and delays the start of Alzheimer’s for those at risk. A lack of physical activity, on the other hand, does not promote blood flow to the brain making cognitive decline more likely.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is another health condition associated with too much sitting. If you sit too often, a clot can form in your leg. If that clot breaks free it can lodge in your lungs causing a pulmonary embolism that is potentially fatal.

The good news is, the effects of extended sitting can be countered by 60 to 75 minutes of moderate physical activity a day. People who are active tend to live longer even if they dedicate a good portion of the day to sitting.

How Can I Counter the Effects of Too Much Sitting?

If you find yourself sitting a lot at work, here are some little things you can do to counter any negative effects.

·                 Get up every 30 minutes to stretch or walk around.

·                 Stand whenever you can, such as when talking on the phone or watching TV.

·                 Try working at a standing desk or improvise with a high table.

·                 Instead of sitting in a conference room, try walking meetings with colleagues.

·                 Create a work desk/treadmill hybrid so you can work on the computer while taking steps.

·                 Take a break each day to walk around the block.

Making these changes will help you burn more calories, it will make you more energetic and it may even increase weight loss.

If you find yourself sitting for long periods of time, it could be negatively affecting your health. Luckily, a bit of exercise can reverse these effects so you can live a long and healthy life. So get up from that desk and start moving!

ADD, or Attention Deficiency Disorder, is a condition characterized by impulsiveness, inattention, and difficulty focusing. People with ADD may have trouble staying on task, they may lose or forget things and they may not pay close attention to details.

ADD is typically diagnosed in children age 4 to 18, and symptoms may improve or go away completely as they get older, but this isn’t always the case.

Furthermore, some adults may not experience symptoms until they get older. They may suddenly find themselves losing focus which can be detrimental to job performance, relationships, and more.

Read on to find out about ADD and how it can persist into adult years.

ADD in Adults

Approximately 30% to 70% of children with ADD will continue experiencing symptoms when they get older. In other instances, adults who were never diagnosed as a child will begin developing more obvious symptoms as they get older. These individuals may realize that they have difficulty focusing, but they seem to be unable to do anything about it.

Adults that experience ADD may find it difficult to carry on professional and personal relationships. They are prone to behavior that includes difficulty controlling anger, impulsiveness and blurting out rude thoughts.

ADD may also make adults less likely to keep their mind on the road when they’re driving. This makes them prone to speeding and having accidents and they may even end up losing their licenses.

Some adults with ADD may also experience hyperfocusing. This is a condition where they begin intently focusing on tasks that interest them while letting other responsibilities fall by the wayside. Adults who hyperfocus may put off tasks they find boring no matter how necessary it is to complete them.

Adults with ADD may also self-medicate by using drugs and alcohol. In most cases, this will escalate the problem rather than treat it.

Treatment for ADD

Fortunately there is treatment available for ADD, no matter what your age may be.

The most common form of treatment is medication. Adults with ADD often take stimulants to treat the condition.

It may seem ironic to take a stimulant for a condition that has you hyped up already, but this medication works to fine tune brain circuits helping adults to focus better.

Stimulants are often prescribed alongside an antidepressant that will stabilize mood and control impulsive behavior.

Adults may also choose to go to therapy to reduce ADD symptoms. A therapist will encourage a patient to improve their organizational and social skills so they can have healthier relationships. They will also help them deal with poor habits and low self esteem which are common traits in ADD patients.

Some experts believe the right diet can also keep ADD symptoms under control. They believe that high protein foods like nuts, beans, eggs and meat can reduce mood swings and maintain energy levels.

ADD can get in the way of your ability to lead a normal life and, unfortunately, it can continue on into adulthood. However, treatments are available that can help those dealing with ADD have healthy relationships and successful careers. It is hopeful that, with continued research, ADD becomes even easier to deal with in future years.

In recent years, CBD has become a popular natural health solution. This non-psychoactive cannabis constituent has been known to do everything from minimizing anxiety to helping with symptoms of epilepsy.

One benefit many people who take CBD experience is an improvement in sleep. Let’s take a closer look at this compound and how it can be used to promote healthy sleep patterns.

How Does CBD Work?

Scientists are still unclear as to exactly how CBD works in the body, but they know that it is linked to the way it reacts to the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS is a system in the body that controls a variety of functions including appetite, pain, sleep and immune response.

The body produces endocannabinoids which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system.

When CBD is introduced in the body, it impacts endocannabinoid receptor activity producing a variety of effects many of which boost wellbeing.

CBD and Sleep

Research shows that CBD interacts with specific receptors in the body affecting the sleep wake cycle. It also works to reduce pain and anxiety, both of which may contribute to insomnia.

Several studies have been conducted proving CBD’s effects on sleep.

A study published in the Medicines journal looked at 409 people with severe insomnia that rated an average of 6.6 on a scale of 1 to 10. Participants were treated with cannabis that contained CBD as well as other compounds.

At the conclusion of the study, the participants’ insomnia was greatly reduced with an average rating of 2.2 on that same insomnia scale. However, it’s difficult to say if the decrease in insomnia was due to the CBD alone or its combination with the other compounds.

Another study published in Permanente Journal looked at 72 adults with sleep issues tied to anxiety. They were given CBD in capsule form to treat both symptoms. Those that felt anxiety was a bigger issue were given CBD during the day while those that were targeting insomnia as their main symptom were given CBD at night time.

At the end of the study, 79% of the participants experienced a reduction of anxiety, while 66% saw an improvement in sleep patterns.

Finding the Right CBD

CBD is gaining in momentum in the healthcare industry, but it’s important to source it from the right brands to get the results you are looking for.

The CBD market is still highly unregulated. As such, many brands make false claims as to the potency and purity of the products they sell. Finding a reliable brand is essential.

Ancient Nutrition is a supplement company you can trust. Ancient Nutrition combines traditional and modern medicine to provide supplements that provide optimal benefits. Their Organic CBD Hemp Sound Sleep Capsules combine full spectrum organic hemp with all natural botanicals to promote a more restful sleep. They are also effective in reducing anxiety and boosting clarity, concentration and overall well-being.

Sleep is a vital component of mental and physical health. If you’re not sleeping well, CBD may be the solution you are looking for. Add it to your daily routine to determine how it can improve your quality of life.
